Female hair loss is as common as hair loss in men. Studies show that at least 2/3 of the female populace experience hair loss at some point in their lives. Hair loss occurrence in women is usually more prevalent when women reach 50 and above but for many reasons, it can come at any age.

Female hair loss is most commonly caused by a hereditary condition. In fact, according to some studies, at least 50% of hair loss on women is an inherited condition. This legacy can come from either the father’s or the mother’s side but when both sides of the family tree have this condition, the likelihood of experiencing hair loss is greater.

Other factors also contribute to female hair loss. There are a wide range of circumstances and conditions that can cause hair loss on women. This include medical conditions such as thyroid disorders, PCOS or polycystic ovary syndrome anemia and autoimmune diseases as the most common; skin disorders such as sebohrreic dermatitis and psoriasis; life changes such as pregnancy and menopause.

Medications that are intended to treat illnesses and diseases can sometimes have as a side effect, the loss of hair. Drug- induced female hair loss can be such a blow to a woman’s self esteem but should not really be a cause for anxiety since the condition can be easily reversed simply by stopping the medication. Some drugs that can cause female hair loss are birth control pills, anti-depressants or mood stabilizer drugs, thyroid medications, drugs that treat breast cancer and more.

Other reasons for female hair loss include drastic weight loss, severe illness, extreme stress, surgery and chemotherapy and radiation. Hair starts to fall several weeks to six months following these incidences. Female hair loss can also be caused by hairstyles that put too much stress on the scalp and hair such as cornrows, tight ponytails and braids.
